SLR receives 2021 ACEC Engineering Excellence Award for the Colby Roundabout Project

Earlier this month, The American Council of Engineering Companies (ACEC), Maine Chapter held its 2021 Annual Engineering Excellence Awards virtual event. SLR is a proud recipient of an Honor Award for the Mayflower Drive at Campus Drive Roundabout on the Colby College campus, located in Waterville, Maine.  The project winners that were selected demonstrated engineering excellence in five categories: innovation; engineering value; client satisfaction; complexity; and social, economic, and sustainable design.

SLR’s transportation engineering One Team approach (which included Bennett Engineering in Freeport, ME and Four Points Associates, Inc. in Lewiston, ME) collaborated closely with Colby’s project management team and the construction contractor (Sargent Corporation in Stillwater, ME) to provide survey, design, value engineering, and construction phase services resulting in a cost savings to the client of over $350,000 and accelerated project delivery.  The project which was completed during the short summer campus break replaced an awkward intersection with a new roundabout providing a new gateway entrance to Colby’s Campus, in addition to the “complete streets” operational, safety, pedestrian, bicycle, and campus transit accommodations which were achieved in conjunction with Colby’s larger campus planning effort to improve the function, safety and aesthetics for students, visitors, faculty, and the local community.
