Geotechnical engineering
Geotechnical engineering is the foundation of all infrastructure projects; often, a project’s risk lies in the ground.
Our geotechnical engineers seek to reduce this risk, by investigating and understanding the sites subsurface conditions, and its behaviour under different loading conditions.
How can we help?
Our large team of geotechnical engineers, geologists and engineering geologists have international experience in research, contracting and consulting. We can provide the full spectrum of geotechnical engineering capability, from desk study through field investigation, factual reporting, geotechnical interpretation, stability analysis, foundation assessment, design and supervision.
Our geotechnical services support and complement SLR’s civil and structural engineering, landscape architecture, water resources, environmental science, planning, and transportation services.
SLR's geotechnical services include:
- Geotechnical investigations & characterisations
- Pavement evaluation & design
- Temporary lateral support design
- Foundation underpinning
- Ground improvement
- Dam evaluation & design
- Waterfront improvements
- Retaining wall evaluation & design
- Shallow & deep foundation design and testing
- Soil & rock characterisation & stability
- Dewatering design
- Vibration monitoring
- Geotechnical construction observation
- Peer review services
Our team includes
-
Osman Pekin
US Manager of Geotechnical Engineering
Osman has over 35 years of experience in geotechnical engineering, within a multi-disciplinary context. He likes to understand the overall project needs and provide geotechnical solutions congruent with the needs of planners, designers, constructors and owners. His project experience includes water/ wastewater facilities, flood control works, dams/ levees, buildings, bridges, tunnels, earth retention structures, mining and dredging. He also practises risk mitigation, forensics, expert witness and value engineering. He has worked on several high-profile projects nationally and internationally.
-
Eric Teale
Principal Geotechnical Engineer
Eric has extensive expertise in subsoil investigations and foundation design, including field investigations for geotechnical and dam projects. He has over 32 years of dam engineering experience throughout New England, having been involved in nearly 100 projects varying in size and complexity. His experience includes stone masonry, concrete, earth embankment, and arch dams, and his services have covered all aspects of impoundment structure projects and related appurtenant structures.
-
Carl Thunberg
Principal Geotechnical Engineer
Carl Thunberg, PE is a Principal Geotechnical Engineer with over 30 years of experience in geotechnical analysis, design, and construction. His areas of expertise include deep and shallow foundation analysis/design for bridges, roadways, buildings, dams, slopes, retaining walls, dewatering, landfills, and planning the execution of large scale subsurface exploration programmes on land and over water. Carl has a strong reputation for professionalism, quality, practicality, teamwork, and an ability to manage projects to successful technical and financial outcomes.

Marie Bartels
Senior Geotechnical Engineer
Marie has over 20 years of experience using subsurface explorations to provide our clients recommendations in geotechnical design, earthwork, and specifications, as well as guidance throughout the construction-phase. Project types include bridge, building, and retaining wall foundations, as well as roadways and riprap design. Her day to day includes organizing subsurface explorations; gathering, reducing, and summarizing data; and writing reports with recommendations that best suit the soils of the site for the construction proposed. Marie is also an environmental advocate and enjoys the outdoors and triathlon.
